HistoryThis work was apparently carried out for a symphony concert of the Moscow branch of the Russian Musical Society, which took place on 7 April 1874. The text was recited by Ivan Samarin, and the orchestra was conducted by Nikolai Rubinstein. The exact date of composition has not been determined. On the manuscript copy of the full score, Karl Albrecht wrote "P. Tchaikovsky. Veschii son, ballad for orchestra, 27 February 1874". From: Музыкальное наследие Чайковского (1958),
