Written in December 1875 in Moscow. Completely finished on 17 December 1875 (according see autograph date on the manuscript). It appears that the chorus was commissioned by the Directorate of the Saint Petersburg section of the Russian Musical Society [to celebrate Osip Petrov’s 50th year as a performer]. The words were written by Nikolai Nekrasov.

The first performance took place on 24 April 1876 at a festival concert at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, on the occasion of Osip Petrov’s jubilee. The cantata was performed by students of the conservatory, conducted by Karl Davydov.
