Composed and scored in December 1872 in Moscow. The autograph date on the manuscript is: "[18]72 1 Dec[ember]".

The first page of the manuscript bears a note by Karl Albrecht: "Serenade, comp[osed] by P. I. Tchaikovsky and performed on 6 Dec. 1872 by students of the Conservatory at 6 pm for the name-day of Nikolai Grigor'evich Rubinstein".
