History

Composed at the beginning of 1870 in Moscow. On 5/18 February 1870, Tchaikovsky wrote to Aleksandra Davydova, "This past winter I have been quite busy as a composer. Three days ago I sent two piano pieces to be printed [1], one of which is dedicated to you. As soon as it comes out, I shall send you a copy straight away" [2].

Published by Petr Jurgenson in April 1870. Dedicated to Aleksandra Davydova.
