History
In 1870 the publisher Vasilii
Bessel commissioned Tchaikovsky to make Russian translations of the texts
of nineteen songs, to be published as part of a new series of collected romances
and songs by Anton Rubinstein.
The songs had all previously been published by a German publisher, mainly with
German texts, but also with three in French, Italian and English respectively. Bessel re-issued all these
songs individually during 1871 and 1872, with their texts given in their original
languages in parallel with Tchaikovsky's new Russian translations. The numbers
shown against the songs in the above listing relate to their numbering in Bessel's collected edition.
