Bassoons in the Tchaikovsky symphonies

When Tchaikovsky wrote the great bassoon solos in the 4th, 5th and 6th symphonies, what kind of bassoons were the players in St. Petersburg and Moscow playing on? Was it a basson or a fagott, ie. a Buffet or a Heckel?
