Mariinsky Orchestra Plays Tchaikovsky at Carnegie - Review - NYTimes.com
Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra give a rousing account to the Six
Tchaikovsky Symphonies here in New York in three concerts.."naturalness was
the hallmark of these performances"...."Even during the bleak, intense and
impassioned passages of the "Pathetique" Symphony, the playing was
unstrained and inevitable. I cannot imagine more lived in and honest
performances."...."In the "opening movement" of the "Pathetique'...the music
emerged in staggered, heaving phrases..in the second theme of the first
movement 'The strings play as a choir of equal voices....It was more a
sighing of thick, textured chords"...and so on for Gergiev's original
renderings of these well known works.....
