Readers who can get the BBC will be interested to know that the BBC
Proms have just started and will feature all Tchaikovsky’s symphonies
including Manfred by a variety of orchestras and conductors plus
the Violin Concerto with Joshua Bell and Romeo and Juliet. All are
broadcast live and repeated a couple of days later, some are televised
(incl. Joshua Bell and Manfred).
Also next week Tchaikovsky is the ‘Composer of the Week’ on Radio 3 –
five morning programmes looking at his career chronologically with quite a
lot of less familiar stuff.
In September my local orchestra – the CBSO will be giving two
performances of Manfred with its chief conductor Andris Nelsons who
has programmed all the symphonies and assorted other works over the past
few seasons. Those of you lucky to live in Boston will know he is the new
principal conductor there so hopefully you’ll get to hear his stupendous
interpretations of Tchaikovsky.
