Ekaterina Assier

Ekaterina Mikhailovna Assier (Екатерина Михайловна Ассиер) was the composer's maternal grandmother, born with the surname Popova (Попова) on 8/19 October 1778 in Saint Petersburg. She was the second child of Mikhail Ivanovich Popov and his wife Anna (b. Rykovskaia).

In 1800 she was married to Andrei Assier (1778-1835), and they had five children -- Mikhail (b. 1802); Ekaterina (1805-1882); Nikolai (b. 1809); Andrei (b. 1811); and Aleksandra (1812-1854), mother of the composer.

Ekaterina Assier died on 5/17 September 1816, and was buried at Smolenskoe Cemetery in Saint Petersburg.
