Sergey Flerov

Russian educator, journalist and critic (b. 3/15 April 1841; d. 5/18 April 1901), born Sergey Vasilyevich Flerov (Сергей Васильевич Флеров); also known by the noms-de-plumes S. Vasilyev (С. Васильев, S. Vasil'yev) and Ignotus.

After graduating from Moscow University in 1864, where he studied historical philology, Flerov became a teacher, and became an inspector of state schools. In 1875 he became a regular contributor to the newspapers Russian Herald (Русские вестник) and Moscow Register (Московские ведомости), and later to the Russian Review (Русское обозрение) from 1890 until 1896, and the newspaper Russian Word (Русское слово) from 1895 until 1896. His many critical articles on music, art and the theatre were often published under the pseudonyms "S. Vasilyev" and "Ignotus".
