Alfred von Glenn

Alfred von Glenn was a Russian cellist, born in 1858 as Konstantin Edmundovich von Glenn (Константин Эдмундович фон Глен).

A student of Karl Davydov at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, Alfred von Glenn gave solo cello recitals in cities such as Dresden, Vienna, Paris and London, and regularly performed with Sergei Taneev, Aleksandr Ziloti, Vasilii Safonov, Leopold Auer and Jan Hřímalý.

From 1880 to 1890 he was principal of the cello, double bass and chamber ensemble classes at the Kharkov (Kharkiv) Music School, and in 1888 he founded the student symphony orchestra at the city's university. At the invitation of Vasilii Safonov, in 1890 he became professor at the Moscow Conservatory (where his students included Gregor Piatgtorskii), and taught there until his retirement in 1921.

Alfred von Glenn died in 1927.
