Nikolai Popov

Maternal great-uncle of the composer (b. 18/29 August 1779 in Saint Petersburg; d. 27 September/9 October 1869), born Nikolai Mikhailovich Popov (Николай Михайлович Попов, Nikolai Mihailovič Popov, Nikolay Mikhaylovich Popov).

Nikolai was the eldest son of Mikhail Popov (1751–1792) and his wife Anna (b. Rykovskaia, ca.1752–ca.1783). In 1823 he married Anna Vilminovna Mertens (daughter of Vilmina Fedorovich Mertens, a privy councillor), and they had six children: Aleksandr (b. 1824); Vladimir (b. 1826); Nadezhda (b. 1831); Nikolai (b. 1834); Kirill (b. 1835); and Ekaterina (b. 1837).

He was awarded the Order of Saint Vladimir (3rd and 4th Class) and Order of Saint Anne (2nd Class).

Nikolai Popov died on 27 September/9 October 1869, and was buried at the Smolenskoe Cemetery in Saint Petersburg.
