AlapaevskAlapaevsk (Алапаевск, Alapayevsk), is a town in the Alapaevsk district (Алапаевский район) of Sverdlovsk oblast (Свердловская область) in the Russian Federation, located on the eastern slope of the central Ural Mountains, at the confluence of the rivers Neyva and Alapaikha. In Tchaikovsky's lifetime it was part of the Verkhotur'e district (Верхотурский уезд) in the Perm' province (Пермская губерния) of the Russian Empire. In 1824 an internationally-renowned metallurgy plant opened at Alapaevsk on the banks of the Neyva, of which Il'ia Tchaikovsky (the composer's father) was the manager here from May 1849 until September 1852. During this time the Tchaikovsky family resided at Alapaevsk, with the children's' governess Fanny Durbach. The twins Anatolii and Modest were born here on 1/13 May 1850. The composer himself left the town in August 1850, at the age of ten, when he was enrolled at the preparatory class of the Imperial School of Jurisprudence in Saint Petersburg. In 1965 a commemorative museum was established at the site of the Tchaikovsky family home at Alapaevsk.
