Astrakhan

Astrakhan (Астрахань) is a major city on the Volga River in southern European Russia, and the administrative centre of Astrakhan Oblast (Астраханская область). In Tchaikovsky's lifetime it was part of the Astrakhan district (Астраханский уезд) in the Astrakhan province (Астраханская губерния) of the Russian Empire.

Tchaikovsky stopped at Astrakhan on 7/19 June 1887, during his voyage down the Volga river. He declared it to be "much better than Saratov" [1].
