Baltimore

Baltimore is a seaport and the largest city in the state of Maryland in the United States.

Tchaikovsky stayed in the city from 3/15 May–4/16 May 1891, as part of his American tour. "Baltimore is a very pretty and clean. The houses are small, each coloured with red bricks and white marble stairs in front of the entrance. First of all we went to Knabe's works to look at his huge piano manufactory... From there we left for the central square, with a wonderful view of the harbour and city. From there to the Peabody Institute. This is an enormously handsome house, built from the money of the tycoon Peabody. It contains a huge library, which is open to everyone; a gallery with paintings and sculpture (remarkably poor and pitiful, although that does not prevent Baltimorans from being proud of it), and the Conservatory" [1].

On 3/15 May Tchaikovsky conducted a concert at the Lyceum Theatre, where he conducted his own Serenade for String Orchestra and Piano Concerto No. 1 (with soloist Adele Aus der Ohe). "Everything went off wholly satisfactorily, but I did not note any special enthusiasm from the public, at least compared with New York" [2]
