Como

Como is a city and provincial capital in the Lombardy region of Italy, situated at the southern tip of the south-west arm of Lake Como, close to the border with Switzerland. In Tchaikovsky's lifetime it formed part of the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia (until 1859), the Kingdom of Sardinia (1859–61), and the Kingdom of Italy (from 1861).

Tchaikovsky visited Como from 18/30 July–21 July/2 August 1873 during his summer vacation. After a "brief and very pleasant journey" from by steamship from Milan, the composer stayed at "the splendid Belle Vue hotel" [1].
