Genoa

Genoa (Genova) is a city and seaport in northern Italy, the capital of the province of Genoa and of the region of Liguria. During Tchaikovsky's lifetime it was part of the Kingdom of Sardinia, until it became part of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861.

Tchaikovsky visited Genoa three times:

  • late January/early February 1872 — during the composer's first visit to Italy.
  • around 25 January/6 February 1877 — returning to Moscow from Nice, accompanied by Vladimir Shilovskii.
  • 29 December 1877/10 January 1878–30 December 1877/11 January 1878 — returning to Sanremo from Milan.
