Hanover

Hanover (Hannover) is the capital of the federal state of Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen) in Germany. During Tchaikovsky's lifetime Hanover was an independent kingdom until 1866, when it became a province of Prussia, and later (from 1871) part of the German Empire.

Tchaikovsky stopped at Hanover from 5/17 March–7/19 March 1889, between conducting engagements in Hamburg and Paris. He noted in his diary that "it is beautiful but commonplace, although there are the medieval houses" [1]. While in the city he continued working on the draft of Act III of The Sleeping Beauty.
