Herculaneum
Herculaneum is an ancient Roman settlement near the town of Ercolano, in the Naples (Napoli) province and Campania region of Italy. During Tchaikovsky's lifetime the area was part of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies (Regno delle Due Sicilie), before becoming part of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861.
Tchaikovsky visited Herculaneum on 25 February/9 March 1882, with his brother Modest, having failed to reach there the previous day because "the wind was so terrible, along with terrible dust" [1]. Although the composer's reaction to the ruins is unknown, he visited the ancient Roman town at Pompeii just a few days later.
