Lyon

Lyon (Lyons) is the second-largest city in France, and is the administrative centre of the Rhône department, and of the Rhône-Alpes region.

Tchaikovsky stayed at Lyon on two occasions:

  • 27 June/9 July–1/13 July 1876 — visiting his brother Modest at 3 place Perrache. Modest was in Lyon in order to study a system of sonic speech that would facilitate better communication with his deaf-mute pupil Nikolai Konradi, then just eight years old.
  • 12/24 July–14/26 July 1876 — returning to Lyon after twelve days at nearby Vichy, the composer set out with Modest Tchaikovsky, Nikolai Konradi and the child's governess Sof'ia Ershova for a journey by steamship down the Rhône to Montpellier.
