MaidanovoMaidanovo (Майданово, Maydanovo) is a village in the Klin district (Клинский район) of Moscow oblast (Московская область) in the Russian Federation, around 6 kilometres south-east of the town of Klin. During the composer's lifetime it formed part of the Klin district (Клинский уезд) in the Moscow province (Московская губерния) of the Russian Empire. Tchaikovsky rented a house at Maidanovo from N. V. Novikova between 14/26 February 1885 and April 1888, before moving to the nearby village of Frolovskoe. However, he then returned to the same house at Maidanovo from 29 May/10 June 1891 until 28 March/9 April 1892, after which he lived at Klin. The list of compositions he completed at Maidanovo includes the operas Cherevichki (1885), The Enchantress (1885–87) and Iolanta (1891–92); the ballet The Nutcracker (1891–92), the symphony Manfred (1885); Nos. 4 to 9 of the Nine Church Pieces (1885); the choruses The Angel Cried Out (1887) and Blessed is He Who Smiles (1887). |
