Nice

Nice is a city in the Alpes-Maritimes department and Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of France. During Tchaikovsky's lifetime it was part of the Kingdom of Sardinia until 1860, when it became part of France.

Tchaikovsky visited Nice on the following occasions:

  • late December 1871/early January 1872–22 January/3 February 1872 — during the composer's Christmas break from the Moscow Conservatory. The central section of the piano piece Humoresque—No. 2 of the Two Pieces (Op. 10)—includes a folk tune which Tchaikovsky heard during this visit.
  • 22 January/3 February–24 January/5 February 1878 — accompanied by Modest Tchaikovsky and Nikolay Konradi, while staying mainly at nearby San Remo.
  • 9/21 March–12/24 March 1881 — Tchaikovsky's visit was cut short by news of Nikolay Rubinstein's death in Paris.
