Nizhny NovgorodNizhny Novgorod (NIzhny Novgorod, Нижний Новгород, Nižnij Novgorod) is the fourth-largest city of the Russian Federation, and the administrative centre of Nizhny-Novgorod oblast (Нижегородская область). From 1932 until 1990 it was known as Gorky (Горкий, Gorkij). During Tchaikovsky's lifetime it formed part of the Nizhny Novgorod district (Нижегородский уезд) in the Nizhny Novgorod province (Нижегородская губерния) of the Russian Empire.
