Nizhny Novgorod

Nizhny Novgorod (NIzhny Novgorod, Нижний Новгород, Nižnij Novgorod) is the fourth-largest city of the Russian Federation, and the administrative centre of Nizhny-Novgorod oblast (Нижегородская область). From 1932 until 1990 it was known as Gorky (Горкий, Gorkij). During Tchaikovsky's lifetime it formed part of the Nizhny Novgorod district (Нижегородский уезд) in the Nizhny Novgorod province (Нижегородская губерния) of the Russian Empire.

Tchaikovsky visited Nizhny Novgorod on two occasions:

• 21 May/2 June 1887 — travelling by rail with his servant Aleksey Sofronov, the composer transferred to a steamship at Nizhny Novgorod, in order to visit his brother Anatoly in Tiflis.
• 29 April/11 May–1/13 May 1893 — visiting his brother Anatoly (who had become deputy governor-general of the city), Tchaikovsky was "fascinated" by the flooding of the rivers Volga and Oka [1].
