Okhtyrka (Akhtyrka)Okhtyrka (Охтирка) is a city and administrative centre of the Okhtyrka district (Охтирський район) in the Sumy oblast (Сумська область) of Ukraine. During Tchaikovsky's lifetime it was known as Akhtyrka (Ахтырка, Ahtyrka), and was the administrative centre of the Akhtyrka district (Ахтырский уезд) in the Kharkov province (Харьковская губерния) of the Russian Empire. In August 1867, Tchaikovsky was brought by Nikolai Rubinstein to meet Prince Nikolai Trubetskoï and his wife Sof'ia at their Akhtyrka estate. The prince was a member of the board of the Russian Musical Society from 1864 to 1876 and 1892 to 1900, and his wife was a member of the Lopukhin family, who were part of the composer's social circle in Moscow. |
