RouenRouen is the administrative centre of the Seine-Maritime department, and the capital of the Haute-Normandie province of France. Tchaikovsky stayed in Rouen from 25 March/6 April to 3/15 April 1891. Work on his opera Iolanta and the ballet The Nutcracker did not allow much time for sightseeing. "Regarding Rouen, there is nothing to say because I saw nothing, besides the art museum, which I liked very much" [1] . After visiting Paris, where he learned of the death of his sister Aleksandra, Tchaikovsky returned to Rouen on 5/17 April accompanied by Vasily Sapel’nikov, Sophie Menter, and Yuly Konyus. He spent one more night "in loathsome Rouen" [2], before leaving for Le Havre, and on to New York. External links: Notes:
