Ukolovo

Ukolovo (Уколово) is a village in the Zolotukhino district (Золотухинский уезд) of Kursk oblast (Курская область). During Tchaikovsky's lifetime it was part of the Shigry district (Щигровский уезд) in the Kursk province (Курская губерния) in the Russian Empire.

The composer stayed at the home of his brother Nikolay ("Kolya") at Ukolovo twice during the early 1890s:

  • 14/26 August to 18/30 August 1891 — "Ukolovo and life with Kolya pleased me very much. I spent four extremely pleasant days with them" [1] . On the last day of this stay Tchaikovsky also visited the poet Afanasy Fet at his nearby estate Vorobyevka
  • 5/17 July to 15/27 July 1893 — working on the draft of the Piano Concerto No. 3.
